A European hacker association Chaos Computer Club claims it can be circumvented with “easy everyday means.” The hacker called Starbug says its possible with a higher resolution image of a finger print.
What is needed is a high resolution 2400 DPI photograph of someone’s fingerprint from a glass surface, this is then laser printed at 1200 DPI to create a thin latex sheet that serves as the fake.
Now I have a few points about this video, and I am not an expect and this is only my suspicious minds ramblings but…..
- Touch ID scans for life in ones finger, so this is scanning through the silicon layer to his own finger.
- How do we know that the silicon finger print is not just that of the hacker in the video, for all we know its scanning through the fake print to his real one.
- If the fake print is genuine and different to the person in the video then fair play to the CCC group. However how likely is it that you will be able to get a high resolution scan of someones finger, let alone off a glass or otherwise.
As I said I’m not expert but Id like to see some more verification around this, if its true great work. Why you would want to access someones iPhone like this is beyond me, most people just are not that interesting.
